The ultimate guide to a happy bunny

Rabbits are more than just cute, quiet pets; they are intelligent, social, and complex animals that require specific care to thrive. Just like the gentle bond shown in the photo above, establishing trust with your bunny is incredibly rewarding.

If you are a new bunny owner or considering welcoming a rabbit into your home, it’s vital to understand that they are not low-maintenance pets. They require precise nutrition, ample space, and dedicated daily attention. This guide covers the absolute essentials for ensuring your bunny lives a long, healthy, and happy life.

Creating the perfect bunny home

Contrary to popular belief, rabbits should never live alone in small outdoor hutches. They are social animals and need room to run, jump, and express natural behaviors.

The best housing provides security while maximizing space. We recommend large indoor pens or dedicated bunny rooms (often called "bunny-proofing" a room). A suitable enclosure should be at least 4 to 6 times the length of the rabbit when it is fully stretched out.

  • Flooring: Do not use wire floors, as they can cause painful foot sores (sore hocks). Use safe, washable fleece mats or paper-based bedding in their litter area.
  • Litter training: Rabbits are easy to litter train! Place a designated litter box in the corner they naturally choose, filling it with hay (since they love to eat while they go).
  • Enrichment: Provide tunnels, cardboard boxes for hiding, and untreated wooden toys for chewing. Boredom leads to destructive behavior.

Diet is non-negotiable: The importance of hay

Rabbit digestive systems are designed to process large amounts of fiber. Their diet must be precise; feeding them incorrectly can quickly lead to life-threatening digestive issues (stasis) or dental problems. Hay is the foundation of their diet. It should make up 80-90% of everything your rabbit eats. This high-fiber intake keeps their gut moving smoothly and naturally wears down their constantly growing teeth.

For proper dental and digestive health, provide unlimited fresh Hay (or Alfa for bunnies under 6 months). It is crucial that their hay rack is never empty. In addition to hay, offer a cup or two of fresh, dark leafy greens daily (like romaine lettuce, kale, or cilantro). Variety is key here to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients.

Lastly, use high-quality rabbit pellets formulated for their age, giving only a very small, measured amount daily (usually 1/4 cup per 6 lbs of body weight). Avoid colorful "muesli" mixes full of seeds and corn, which are harmful, as they can cause digestive upset and contribute to obesity.

Health and happiness

Rabbits are highly social creatures that thrive on companionship, and they have distinct health needs that require attention.

The best companion for a rabbit is another rabbit! If you cannot have a bonded pair, you must provide multiple hours of daily interaction. They need at least 3 hours of supervised free-roam time outside their enclosure every day to exercise and play.

  • Spaying/Neutering: This is non-negotiable. Neutering drastically reduces destructive behavior, prevents aggression, and eliminates the high risk of uterine cancer in females.
  • Check-ups: Rabbits should have an annual check-up with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian. Regular vet care is crucial because rabbits are masters at hiding signs of illness.
  • Observe daily: Watch for any changes in eating habits or litter box output. A sudden stop in eating or pooping is a medical emergency that requires immediate veterinary care.

Conclusion:

Caring for a bunny is a dedicated, rewarding commitment. By prioritizing their spacious environment, their fiber-rich diet, and their need for companionship, you will build a deep, trusting bond that offers years of quiet, joyful friendship.
